Assisted Reproductive Technology is a branch of medicine dedicated to assisted procreation through a set of clinical and biological techniques. The goal is to allow hypofertile couples to have a child or who cannot have a child safely.

Today, about one in six couples have difficulty conceiving. A consultation with a specialist in reproductive medicine is often necessary to treat these problems. The causes of infertility can affect both women and men with an equivalent frequency.

Depending on the situation, the PMA intervenes to offer assistance to the couple in procreation by using different medical techniques. The techniques most often used are:

    • Artificial insemination AI, also called intrauterine insemination (IUI)
    • In Vitro Fertilization IVF
    • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection ICSI
    • Embryo freezing
    • Freezing of oocytes and sperm
    • Embryo transfer, fresh or frozen

Fertility treatment refers to a complete treatment process that includes several steps:

    1. First consultation with the gynecologist
    2. Complete assessment for both partners as the 1st stage of the investigations.
    3. Discussion of the results with the referring physician during a new consultation. At this stage and depending on the information obtained, the specialist has several options available:
      • Recommend preservation of fertility: freezing of oocytes and sperm.
      • Fertility surgery can also be offered, or may be a mandatory step, in the fertility treatment process.
      • If the results obtained are not sufficient to identify the origins of infertility, the specialist will ask the couple for an additional assessment.
    4. The results of additional examinations are discussed during a 3rd consultation. The specialist is at this level in a position to direct you towards an adequate treatment by one of the techniques of assisted reproductive technology.
    5. Realization of the assisted reproduction technique itself: Artificial Insemination AI, In Vitro Fertilization IVF, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection ICSI, preservation of fertility
    6. A new consultation is scheduled to check if a pregnancy has started by simple blood test. Your referring doctor will follow you throughout your pregnancy. If there is no pregnancy, further investigations will be carried out to identify the reasons for the failure.
