Gynecology is the medical specialty dedicated to women and specifically to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the female reproductive organs. The specialty that deals with equivalent medical aspects for men is andrology.

Obstetrics is an aspect of gynecology that concerns the pregnant woman and her unborn child. Therefore it supports two patients and requires the doctor to master a number of diverse and complex techniques.

The obstetrician gynecologist is the specialist in medicine and surgery for women. He also masters diagnostic methods by ultrasound in medical imaging and prenatal diagnosis (Fetal Heart Rate).

Being a particularly complex specialty of medicine, gynecology is concerned with all issues of women’s health. In the case of pathologies related to the female genital organ, he consults and performs the examinations necessary for the establishment of the diagnosis. Then he prescribes the appropriate treatment, medical or surgical. In the area of obstetrics, the gynecologist consults the patient, examines and advises her throughout her pregnancy.

The gynecologist also regularly carries out preventive examinations (such as a smear or breast exam) and takes care of benign and malignant diseases of the female reproductive system: vulva, vagina, uterus, tubes, ovaries and breasts. He also treats problems related to puberty, infertility, gynecological oncology or even senology, and advises women of all ages on contraception issues, in their desire to have a child or on problems related to menopause.

When establishing the diagnosis, the gynecologist first performs one or more outpatient consultations, that can be an obstetric consultation (pregnant woman) and a gynecological check-up. He/She collaborates with a number of services to confirm his/her diagnosis, in particular with the medical imaging service (ultrasound, mammography, scanner, MRI), the endoscopy service or the biological analysis laboratory.

Once the diagnosis is made, the gynecologist is able prescribe medical treatment using drugs or surgical treatment, either by laparotomy (incision in the abdomen) or by laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgery) .
